So how does one deal with uncomfortable memories? I suppose there are two ways you can do it.
One (the one that I use most often) is when you bury it away and never go back to it again. Rather than try to explain it or make sense of it, you purge it (or atleast attempt to) from your system and program yourself that it doesn't rear it's ugly head again.
The second method is one where you are consistently poking at it. Making a habit of constantly visiting that past happening to such an extent that it no longer carries any significance. Proding it continously so that it becomes numb and unable to cause any harm to you.
I'm sure there are better psychological explanations to these. I just speak from experience.
