I have just returned from 3 days jamaat.
We went to MCCC (Muslim Community Centre of Canada) on Collegeway and Ridgeway in Mississauga. Now, whenever I refer to 'jamaat' in my musings, I do not mean Jamat-e-Islami, but rather, I refer to Tablighi Jamaat. The Difference? Here (This by the way is a very nice explanatory article)
I hadn't gone in a very long time and it was beginning to take a toll on me. Going out in jamaat is essentially a vigorous spiritual exercise that has been the determining factor in the shaping of Mudasser Ali that we know today.
Thoughts:
- I could not believe how many people I knew around Oakville-Mississauga. I'd walk in (or rather, they'd walk in) to the masjid and one of us would automatically say: 'What are you doing here?'
- It is a popular thing to say that Uncles are running our masjids these days. I have a question. Would anyone BUT an uncle get up for fajr every, single, day? Props to the uncles. You guys are truly gangsta. (yeah, you have your faults too, just dishing out some love)
- I realized this weekend that I listen to too much music. I really dont want to hear that I should let it 'Burn' while im in sajdah.
- I met Abdus Samad again. Turns out his dad owns Amira's (the hijab boutique that the girls rant about). I dont know what to think of his new look. He went from being semi thug to the 'Maroon 5' thick frame scruffy beard look pretty fast.
- I escaped to Al-Falah to meet up with my ICNA buddies after Asr. Kind of ironic considering ICNA derives its inspiration directly from Jamat-e-Islami. I dont discriminate though. My boys are still my boys.
- Mississauga is nice and spread out. There's also a ton of muslims around. It's expensive as hell though.
- I got bored on Friday and decided to call Usama so we could 'run a mission'. At 2:30 at night. We ended up going to the lakeshore. We got scared after a bit and ran back into the car and went down Mississauga Road to look at the rich people's abodes. I was reminded of Saudi back when we used to go to the 'corniche' and would pass by the beach houses *uselessly nostalgic thought*
- 'Sultan Bhai' made a funky looking stew that he nicknamed 'Motor Oil'. The brothers used the elegant melange of thawed vegetables and some sort of meat for 3 days. I took one bite and never touched it again. Thank God for Zater and Extra Virgin Olive Oil.
- I arrived home to a redecorated basement and my bedsheets missing. Same ol' parents though: 'You look funny, what did you lose this time?'
